The Demon Whom Cannot Be Beaten: Gender

Megami Tensei series consists more than 60 games. This huge library contains 7 female protagonists and 0 non-binary ones. This is disapointting but unsuprising. In fact it has a probably better ratio than a large number of video game series. But this series and the games developed in the same way of thinking particularly annoys me.
In majority of games the protagonist is the stand in for the player. Even in rare times when protagonist has a fully developed pesonality, protagonist's gender is hardly have a relevance in the story. Yet the character must be a young man, almost always a young man. If protagonist has a relationship, they are always straight, even though sexuality in itself is never commented on series.
Yes, this is "male gaze", this is male, cis and heterosexual centered thinking. Yes it dominates pretty much most of the media. But why here too? The series are about deep philosopical ideas, exporing human psyche, defeating god(s), leading the fate of your world. Yet gender is just appearently so imposing that it must be obeyed completely,  so fearsome that it cannot be spoken, so powerful that it cannot be beaten; a few times developers tried to tackle it they failed, most notoriously with literally sex surgeon manifesting/but totally not trans Naoto's story of just-accepting-"her"- body-as-is story in Persona 4. Developers are scared of gender in video games just as I, a trans person, scared of it in real life.
Homever the solution is not just so simple as adding gender options for protagonist, even having more well developed female characters.  While that would be great, it is just beginning of the fight. The minds that cannot think a woman as Demi-Fiend must be changed and no, this isn't a Japanese problem only, Western developers are arguably often worse at making games containing anything other than pure unfiltered manly manliness in their every accept; presentation, themes, plots and character. Just think about how many times a game felt femme, androgynous or agender without being a fetish or ridicule object for the audience and you will realise just how menacing the gender demon can be in videogames.
