In 1957, the president of Turkey Celal Bayar said "In 30 years, Turkey will become the little America." That prediciton came true in a lot of ways. Turkey became a proud NATO (slave)member and rapidly neo-liberalized country. Homever, I am pretty sure he would be suprised how the country mirrors the Empire so much in terms of political climate. Just like in US elections, Turkey can be pretty much split into two informal groups. Pro-Erdoğan group and anti-Erdoğan group.
Pro-Erdoğan group contains parties like: AKP(Justice and Development Party-Gov. party), MHP(Nationalist Movement Party-small opposition party) and lots of small reactionary parties. These parties mirror Republicians: Nationalist, fundementalist, supporter of neo-liberal economics. The only difference between various far-right parties is whether they emphasise Islamism or Turkism more. AKP started mostly Islamist but for the last few years they grew their nationalist base more and more. MHP and their hardcore adherents bloat about how different their ideology is and how they are the most Turkist are but in reality other than a really small hard-line secular majority, they supported and keep supporting AKP in pretty much all the reactionary efforts. That part shouldn't suprise you much, every country has conservative parties at all, BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE.
Anti-Erdoğan group consists CHP(Republic People Party-main opposition party) and fresh liberal-ish(?) defectants from MHP now gathered around a party called İyi Parti(Good Party-yes really I am serious). There is also HDP(People's Democratic Party-Kurdish opposition party) which was actually kinda effecive in opposition but now most of their members are in the prison. CHP is officialy a Kemalist party, which is like nationalist social democracy, but today their politics are revolved around as such:
-They are mainly about opposing everything AKP does, even to the point they contradicted themselves when AKP undid AKP's own policies
-They just look somewhat more progressive than AKP but actually don't hold radical postions about anything, only pose as defending such positions only as opposition to government.
-They have no solutions for actual problems, no apeearent vision for future. In last elections all they offered tepid things like increase in wages, "living up to Atatürk's vision" and vague promises, most of which also promised by AKP anyways.
-They will look more nationalist, more conservative, more secular, more inclusive, more liberal, more socdem-ish, more Kemalist as they seem neccesary.
-They are just as engaged in corruption as AKP.
-They are removed from voters and don't have much plans to connect with them.
-Their hardcore voting base is secular upper-middle class bu a lot of people, especially marginlized groups vote for them simply because they don't want AKP win.
-Classism is common among partisans. They usually mock AKP voters of being uneducated and their votes being easily "sold" by coil and food aid.
-They can show brilliant bi-partisanship when it comes to making ruling class stronger and military campaigns of Turkey.
-Most of their opposition is centered around Erdoğan. Their main praxis is insulting and having daily dramas with him and discussing the New Controversial Thing Erdoğan Said for days. In their politicians and a significant part of voter base, the thought of Erdoğan is the worst thing happened to Turkey EVER, source of ALL EVIL in the world being Erdoğan and obsession with removing him for ALL COSTS. In other words being anti-Erdoğan is by far the most important thing to them and the main thing they promise is returning to times of Mythical Good Democratic Turkey.
-Tried to create their own charismatic leader with large media support.
Are these sounded familiar? Well, these are common features of liberalism, BUT HOLY MOUSE this sounds exactly like Democrats, doesn't it? The one difference I can see is Anti-Erdoğan group are utterly failed at creating their own cult leader, they are trying same thing with "Good Party" second time and they will fail again as cult leaders cannot be countered with cult-leaders, they can only be fought aganist by class conciousness. The second difference is there are no loud centrists because there are no loud radical left either.
That's why when I hear news about US, I sometimes smile to the dark humor that comes from liberalism failing in the other side of the world in the prety much same ways.
